Route 29 Corridor Study

Project Background

The Route 29 (Seminole Trail) corridor improvement study will evaluate automobile, transit, bicycle, and pedestrian conditions between Route 649 (Airport Road) in Albemarle County and Deerfield Drive in Greene County. The study vision is for Route 29 to provide safe travel and adequate capacity for all uses and users of the roadway.

Study Goals

  1. Improve safety
    1. Reduce/manage vehicular conflict points
    2. Provide pedestrian/bike crossing opportunities at intersections
    3. Provide separation between vehicles and bicycle/pedestrian modes
  2. Manage congestion
    1. Increase person throughput
    2. Evaluate best intersection control types
    3. Make efficient use of right-of-way for all users
  3. Increase multimodal usability and accessibility
    1. Provide bicycle facilities that connect to nearby parks and other amenities
    2. Provide ADA accessible transit facilities along corridor
    3. Provide safe pedestrian crossings at target intersections
  4. Support future growth
    1. Develop access management strategies
    2. Support local traffic as well as regional demands
    3. Provide transit services that offer other mode choices for commuters

Study Area

Of the 19 total intersections, 8 are in Greene County and 11 are in Albemarle County. The study will assess future travel projections and development patterns.

Project Background

Lead by consultants Kittelson & Associates, the project team will communicate with key stakeholders throughout the study as described in the subsequent sections. Key project deliverables will be circulated for review with members of the stakeholder group.

The stakeholders identified for the study include:

  • Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT)
  • Albemarle County
  • Greene County
  • Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission (TJPDC)
  • Transit Agencies: Jaunt and Charlottesville Area Transit (CAT)

The purpose of the study is to identify and vet potential operational and safety improvements along Route 29 north of Charlottesville in Albemarle County and Greene County.
